With the warm summer weather here, putting on a stuffy suit and tie is probably the last thing on your list of what you want to do. It can be depressing enough seeing that the sun is shining and you cannot go outside to enjoy it. So if your industry allows for it, why not put away those pressed pants for the next few months.
Predictability of Work Environment
If your day to day activities are scheduled out in advance it can be really easy to have more casual workwear. For example, if you know ahead of time that you have a meeting Tuesday afternoon then dress up in more professional workwear on Tuesday. This is not to say that you should come in a baggy t-shirt and jeans with holes in the knees on all of the other days – you still need to take care in how you look.
Professionally Casual
The best solution is to dress comfortably but still look good enough in case an unexpected meeting comes up; easier said than done. A couple of ideas could be to exchange your dress pants for more casual cotton pants or capris, and put on a nice, comfortable shirt instead a stiff collared button up shirt. An easy way to get away with the more casual approach is to put your logo on an embroidered polo shirt, this way you are staying comfortable and professional with the company brand.
Addressing Concerns
If your company does not normally dress down during the summer months, maybe put together a few guidelines for coworkers to follow. This ensures everyone stays professional and does not leave people wondering what is and what is not considered appropriate workwear. Another thing to consider is your clients. If they are accustomed to seeing your professional workwear maybe display a fun, summer-themed note on the receptionist desk or in a monthly newsletter. The message can explain that your company may have traded in their beach towels to work at the office, but you are going to keep the summer spirit in your wardrobe.
As long as you keep your wardrobe appropriate everyone will be happy this summer.
